Langholm Walks: Guided Walks for 2008

April 6: Target Burn,Castle Craigs,Rashiel.   11Km/6.5 Miles. Max. Ht. 355m.

Start Kilngreen Car Park 10 a.m. Finish Kilngreen.

Moderate. Bring a packed lunch.

The walk initially proceeds Northwards along the side of the Ewes Valley , on tracks. This is followed by a steep climb on open hillside to The MacDiarmid  Memorial. Further track and open hillside passes Castle Craigs , the Bible Fields, to Rashiel, and then back around the shoulder of Whita hill .Can be wet in places.

May 4: Lower Tarras valley.  13 Km/8 Miles. Max Ht. 151m.

Start Kilngreen Car Park 10 a.m. Finish Kilngreen. Easy/Moderate.

Bring a packed lunch.

This is a new walk which includes the lower end of the Tarras valley from Tarrasfoot bridge to Cronksbank Bridge. Mostly track and short sections of very quiet tarmac road. .Lovely  walk through the deciduous woodland along the sides of the Tarras. Can be wet in parts.

July 6: Old Irvine , Glencorf, Becks. 16Km./10 Miles. Max Ht. 180m.

Start Kilngreen Car Park 10a.m. Finish Kilngreen. Moderate.

Bring a packed lunch.

This walk, from the current Langholm Walks booklet, covers some wonderful varied scenery to the West and South of Langholm. A mixture of track, open hillside, and a short stretch of very quiet road. Can be wet in places.

August 3: Glendinning, Corlaw, Greensykes, the Telford Memorial and the Antimony Mine.  14 Km/8.5 miles. Max Ht. 340 m.

Start 10a.m. Telford Memorial  Car Park at Glendinning ,Meggat Water,G.R.299970 NY. Finish at the same car park.

Bring a packed lunch. Moderate.

An entirely new walk taking in the new Thomas Telford Memorial, the Antimony Mine, and a lovely walk through woodland up the Meggat Water. Mostly forest track., but short section of open hillside.

September 7: Mid Hill, Clagberry Hill, Fingland Knowe, Glencorf Burn and Becks.  14 Km./8.5 miles. Max Ht.382m.

Start 10a.m. and finish at Kilngreen Car Park. Strenuous.

Bring a packed lunch.

A modification of a previous walk  including the new Wind Turbines, and a new area in Fingland  Knowe. Mostly open hillside , and wet at times. Wonderful views in all directions.

October 5:  Meikledale Walk. 14Km/9 miles. Max Ht. 526m.

Start 10a.m. Ewes Village Hall (  W. side of A7, 5 miles N. of Langholm G.R.377925  NY. Finish Ewes Hall. Strenuous.

Bring a packed lunch.

New walk opened a year ago, and now features as an addendum in the Langholm Walks booklet. The first and last 3 Km.  ( approx ) are relatively easy on farm tracks. The central section is open hillside, rough, pathless, often wet and is slow going. Superb views in all directions.

November 2:  Canonbie circular walk. 15Km./9.5 miles.Max Ht.119m.

Start at 10 a.m. Canonbie Village Hall. Finish Canonbie Hall. Moderate.

Bring a packed lunch.

This is a long but easy walk which takes you through the award winning village of Rowanburn and follows the banks of the Liddel and Esk rivers.
